Shropshire house is a very unusual build, and with unusual builds come unique challenges.

ETS (Engineered Timber Solutions) were tasked with creating a roof for Shropshire house, a momentous brief, as the build required both a roof and a connecting link to the garage, containing a home gym. The shape of the building is similar to two connected hexagons, and it’s quite a masterpiece.

Leah Lewellyn, Operations Manager at ETS comments on the design process, which had to embrace sustainability credentials, which were high on the client’s agenda.

“The homeowner opted to include a Green Sedum roof and MVHR. This meant that the build required a strong joist system that could accommodate the large spans of the extensive home design and was lightweight in nature to support the sedum roof.” She added:

“As Posi-Joists are made up of an open metal web structure the MVHR could simply be routed through them along with all the building services.”

Posi-Joist was solely used in the creation of the roof, with over 320 joists used in total. The system really came into its own on this project as it meant no timber joists needed cutting onsite, they also provided larger fixing surfaces for the ceiling.

The roof was designed using MiTek software, a key factor in helping deliver the build. With an eye for detail and a stylistic build, it’s certainly a project to be proud of. For ETS, Posi-Joist was the only solution to keep up with the demands of the project.

“MiTek’s Posi-Joist was the best option, due to the high load and the services required to run through the build. It was a challenging project, which required articulate measurements due to multiple joist profiles and stands.”

The angular design of the build provided more complexities, but the off-site design and manufacturing ensured installation day was smooth and straightforward. The finished product is a beautiful home, which the homeowner is thrilled with.
